gm_wayremake is a Garry's Mod map by The Fun and panman released on the 17th of May, 2025. The map is a remake of Their earlier map WAY. The map had a development lasting from October 2023 to May 2025, with the first still existing build of gm_wayremake being from the 15th of October 2023.

The Map

gm_wayremake loosely follows the general layout of WAY, While it shares a semi similar blueprint, there's tons of stuff that is either completely different or just not there. The maps general shape is a square, with its setting being its own island in the middle of an ocean. As for architecture, the map has: A Large skyscraper-like building with the "Construct Inc." sign on it, 12 houses (two of which have garages), a Church, a Library, a Restaurant, a Train station, and a Park-like area next to the Skyscraper. Theres also one Ship and one Boat in the maps playable area, along with one more ship in the skybox.

Development Pre-buildings remake

Development started on The 15th of October 2023, in the coming months slowly more stuff started getting added in, with stuff like the first revisions of the houses and church were done. At this time the Library just didnt exist at all. The Resteraunt and Skyscrapers insides stayed mostly the same through the entire development however, with mostly just some Texture changes and other smaller changes. The houses layout during this time had usually only Three rooms, with no bathroom and only just general rooms, with stuff like a living room and kitchen, also the houses didnt have any doors inside of them, they only had one for entering and exiting. The Church was Shaped more like a Courthouse back then. Inside the church there was only the main room with nothing much else. The church used to also use the Gordon Freeman shader test model (models/shadertest/shaderslab5.mdl) as windows. The church also had a way more moody and also more warm lighting, with more red and orange colors being used inside compared to its current way more cold and flat colors. These buildings had two massive downsides to them that caused them to be removed. Those being them being somewhat ugly this mostly only really goes for the church but more importantly, how badly they were optimized. During gameplay, these buildings basically didnt hide anything behind them due to the way they were made, causing horrible FPS on such a simple map, even on hardware which shouldve handled it completly fine. During this time Development was alot more experimental, with alot of features being tested out that just weren't practical in anyway, causing them to also be cut out.

Development After-buildings remake

Sometime during development, around late 2024 to early 2025, the target switched to getting way better FPS instead of adding more stuff in. The Houses and church were completly remade to fix the last two major issues with them. The houses were made to include doors inside along with real optimization, and a way more normal layout, with A bathroom being added in too. The Church was completly remade to look alot more like an actual church, with stuff like a Bell tower being added. The Church from the inside became way bigger and taller, featuring a balcony like area you can access with stairs upon entering the church. The only thing that really was kept in the church was a Chandelier entity, along with the info_player_start models usage. The location of some buildings were slightly Tweaked here too, Along with the entire map also being moved away from the Source Engines 0,0 point. panman was responsible for ALL optimization across the map. After months of optimization and Fixes, The map finally started to approach a finished state. During this time the Library was also added, due to the spot it was placed in being extremely empty and needing something. The library was the final major addition to the map, after that it was all minor tweaks and even more optimization, along with tying loose ends. Night and Snowy versions of the map were also being made around this era, however weren't finished.

Scrapped Features

During Development, multiple buildings and or features had to be completly cut out, These include: A playground that was in the map behind the first row of houses very early on, removed due to looking bad. a destroyable house, you could walk into a house next to it, press a button in the house, and the house next to it would be blown up, Removed for optimization reasons. a Boss battle easter egg. This feature spawned tons of Combine for the player to fight, was removed due to being pointless, along with generally just hard to work on. Then some other structures like a dock that was removed and replaced by the beach instead, and a sign that wouldve had the layout of the map on it, removed for being pointless.

Easter Eggs

Memorial Easter Egg
Memorial to Viivi
Memorial to The Fun's Grandma's Dog

gm_wayremake has several Easter Eggs, some of the smaller ones are a Gnome you can find in the Construct Inc. Skyscraper, Some References to Hammer, Scott The Woz, And GTA. In The park-like area part of the map, theres a structure with a door on it and a Lambda symbol on it too, Trying to noclip into the building will instantly teleport you infront of it, Same goes for trying to Noclip into the Construct Inc. Towers insides. To unlock the Structure for use, the player has to find Five watermelons in the map and then break them, The map has several paintings that show spots in the map for guidence on where to look. After breaking Four of the Five total melons, all of the paintings will turn into the frame of the boombox located inside the first Garage house. Interacting with the Radio in this state gives you coordinates that the player is meant to input into the console and use with the Source Engines setpos command. After doing so, the player is teleported into a dark room, Specifically the room in question is the dark room from Garry's Mod 9's gm_construct map, The exit path is blocked, Trying to leave the room will remove the floor, and then the player is meant to jump down into the hole, which will Kill the player. After respawning, The player is meant to teleport themselves back, however this time when the player tries to leave again, The player get teleported into a Padded room with a corpse in it. One of the walls in the room has no collisions, meaning the player can walk right through. After doing that the player is greeted with the Final Fith Melon. Upon breaking it the wall infront of the player will open to a bright white void. Walking in will make The players screen fade in and out of white, after fading out the player will have been teleported infront of the Structure with the door removed. The structures insides Have a memorial for The Fun's Grandma's Dog as the dog had passed during the development of the map. In the structure is also the credits listed.

Before the church remake there used to be a cross on the church, was ultimatly removed. The maps current BSP build is Version 5793. The decals infront of the Restaurant used to be in the completly wrong placed all the way to the release of the map, was finally fixed in the 2025 June 12th update to the map.
