gm_latola is a Garry's Mod map by The Fun. gm_latola is based of the real latolankatu located in Joensuu, Finland. The map was released to the workshop in a beta development phase on the 25th of September, 2025, and the maps latest update (Build 5636) was released on the 28th of March 2026. The map also has a day-time version called gm_latola_day that was released with the 5636 build update.
gm_latola follows the layout of latolankatu somewhat loosely, some areas are very different to their real life counterparts for stuff like private property, however most areas follow it somewhat if not pretty close. The area that gm_latola recreates is about a 2,47 km (381 290,44 m²) sized square of the actual space. The map extends to the Source Engines 32,768 HU map size limit, if going by this metric, the map would be about 2.50 km (389,663.10 m²) in size. The map has some buildings to go inside of, these being: Three apartments, one "K-Market" store, and an "Istanbul" restaurant. The map on its night version has a dark, rainy and foggy atmosphere, Whilst the daytime one removes the rain and darkness however keeps the fog.
Development had started somewhere summer 2025, it was meant to be for a Latolankatu themed Source SDK 2013 Base mod, however never got finished. Sometime during early September of 2025, The Fun rediscovered the projects main maps .vmf file on an SSD and decided to expand on it, and to move the focus to rather be a Garry's Mod map instead of Source SDK 2013 Base. For an extremely long time, performance had been especially horrible due to the Source Engine struggling with managing its drawcalls for such a big map, and the dense prop placements in the map, several fixes were attempted such as: giving the trees an LOD (Level of Detail) model, remaking the maps occluder brushes multiple times, remaking some builings with better and cleaner brushwork, along with different compiler settings. Most of these "solutions" didn't help with the optimization that much, so The Fun decided to make every prop_static fade out when far enough from the player, because he is stupid and cannot optimize source engine maps at all
